Governor's Message

Plenty To Do Last Week

By Jim Fusco
I hope everyone is in the Holiday Spirit. I wish you all Happy Holidays. Many clubs are having their Holiday celebrations and I thank all who have invited me to attend. Unfortunately, since I have not figured out yet how to be in two or three (sometimes four) places at the same time, I have needed to give my regrets way too often. Have a great time and enjoy the Fellowship! Read more

District 7910 Celebrates At Annual Holiday Party

Rotarians throughout District 7910 gathered on December 6 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Leominster for the District's annual Holiday Party. Shown, left to right, are: Supriya and Satya Mitra of the Rotary Club of WorcesterGino Frattalone of the Rotary Club of Acton-Boxborough; and Cheryl Rosen on the Rotary Club of Hudson.

District 7910's 2015 Holiday Party was held on December 6 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Leominster. A tradition of the District Holiday Party is the formal anointing of the newest future district governor (see photo, right). Unfortunately last year, the confirmation from Rotary International of Karin Gaffney (front row, middle) came after the Holiday Party and, due to an oversight, Pat and Skip Doyle (front row, far left and second from left) also did not get anointed.

This year, we had the honor of formally anointing Pat and Skip as co-district governors for 2016-2017, Karin as DG for ‘17-’18, and Steve Sager (front row, far right) as DG for ‘18-‘19. They are shown posing with District Governor Jim Fusco (rear row, far right) and the following past  district governors (rear row, left to right)Doug Detweiler, '13-'14; Tom Polito, '11-'12; Carol Toomey, '09-'10; Ed King, '03-'04; Ralph Hammond, '01-'02; Bob Cassidy, '97-'98; Roger Frost, '95-'96; Klaus Hachfeld, '08-'09; and Ed Hall (seated), '87-'88.

Shown, in the back row, are the following WPI Rotaractors: Kathy Suqui (far left); current Vice President Mike Figueroa (second from leftBen Mart (third from left); Nithin Das (fifth from left); and current President Rita Newman (fourth from right).

Montachusett Area Rotary Donates To Kaylee's Kare Kits For Kids

The Rotaract Club of Montachusett Area has donated $250 and 1,000 meals of macaroni and cheese to Kaylee’s Kare Kits for Kidz, which is run by Kylee McCumber (shown, center) of Leominster. When Kylee, was 11 years old and attending Southeast Middle School, she realized that many of her fellow students were hungry at home. So she decided to do something about it. She started by preparing 12 backpacks for hungry kids, and she now packs Kare Kits for more than 350 school kids.

The donated meals were among the 48,264 meals that were packaged by District 7910 Rotarians on November 14 at Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough to benefit End Hunger NE. Both the cash and meal donations will make a difference.

Shown posing with Kylee are District Governor Jim Fusco (left), a member and past president of the Montachusett Area club, and Montachusett Area President Leslie Storrs (right).

Nashoba Valley Rotary Brings Purple Pinkie Day To Stow School

Catherine Hammill and Chris Spear (shown, right) of the Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley visited Hale Middle School in Stow on October 22 to raise awareness for ending polio. The sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders already knew about polio and prevention from their teachers, who have made it part of their fall curriculum.

The students gave $1 each to vaccinate children around the world, and in return Chris and Catherine painted their pinkies with markers and nail polish. A big thanks goes out to the Nashoba Regional School District - especially the principals, teachers, and health staff who helped with project.
Wellesley And Needham Rotarians Hold Annual Football Banquet

By Richard Forte

A full house of Wellesley and Needham Rotarians plus football folks from the respective towns filled Henderson Hall in Wellesley for the annual Football Banquet, which was hosted this year by the Wellesley club. The football trophy was on display down front and the event was well covered by Wellesley Media and Fox Channel 25, which was doing a documentary on the oldest schoolboy rivalry in the country.

Wellesley President John Adams introduced guest speaker Mike Dowling of Channel 5 sports fame.  A Wellesley resident, Dowling said he expected that “something will happen that will be memorable.” He brought up two players from each team. Each player was asked, “What is the best part of playing for your team?” The responses were impressive: high ideals, mutual respect, family, a great experience, etc.

Then, Dowling conducted a quiz to see which team was up on the game’s rich history:

  • When did the rivalry start? (1882)
  • Which team has the most wins? (Wellesley, 68)
  • How many ties have there been? (9)
  • When was there a scoreless tie? (1887, when the Needham fans went out on the field to tackle a Wellesley player)
  • Why in 1896 was there a one-hour delay in the game? (No football was returned to the field after kickoff!)
  • What is the name of the Wellesley club’s president? (John Adams)
  • When was a previous John Adams president of the U.S.? (1797 to 1801)
  • When was his son president of the U.S.? (John Quincy Adams, 1825-1829)
  • Who was president of the U.S. in 1882? (Chester Arthur)
  • What number game is this? (128)
  • Who won the game when the current players were in eighth grade? (Needham)
Dowling also auctioned off two passes for the turkey game for $110. A great time was had by all!

Newton Rotary Gives Thanks Through Community Service

By Tony Bibbo

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, a group of Newton Rotarians gathered to express their gratitude for all that we as citizens of this wonderful community, enjoy each day. They put together a work day to assist one of Newton’s vital human-service programs. With rakes, brooms, shovels and other tools used to clean outdoor property, they arrived at a property occupied by The Second Step program and together raked, bagged, and swept the yard free of leaves and other debris,

Second Step fosters the safety, stability, and well-being of survivors of domestic violence. Their residential and community-based programs build on the strengths, needs, and values of the individuals and families we serve. In partnership with survivors and in collaboration with the community, they lay a foundation for a future free from abuse and full of possibility.

In the spirit of “service above self” – a strong value shared by Rotarians throughout the world Newton’s ambassador’s of goodwill stepped forward in a meaningful way to say thank you. This was indeed a demonstration of the true meaning of this special holiday. One can truly give thanks in celebrating by giving.

As one participant in the work group stated, “How fortunate we have been to start this joyous holiday with this effort. We did good, we feel great, and how proud to be a Newton Rotarian, which provided me the opportunity to celebrate with an exhilaration of self esteem.”

Shown, right to left, are Newton Rotarians Susan Peghi, Arti Mahon, Marie Presti, Joseph Nkurunziza, Cindy Laughrea, Ron Faccenda, Chris Chu, Andy Willinger and Paul Romano.

By Roy Balfour

The Rotary Foundation has been ranked one of the Top 5 Charities Changing the World in 2015, according to CNBC, with a Worldwide Charity Score of 96.31 out of 100. “This not-for-profit organization works to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace. Using Rotary Foundation grants, Rotary's 35,187 clubs across the globe develop and carry out sustainable humanitarian projects and provide scholarships and professional training opportunities,” CNBC reports. “One of its biggest initiatives aims at eradicating polio through its PolioPlus program, launched in 1985. Since then, Rotary and its partners, including the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have immunized more than 2.5 billion children, reducing the incidence of polio by 99 percent and eradicating it from all but three countries,” CBNC continues.

Last year in Central Massachusetts, District 7910 clubs’ $210,000 in donations provided a $1-million impact for projects undertaken by our fellow clubs in the district. That is a great financial return on donation investment into helping humanity.

Polio Returns To Ukraine

Polio has returned to war-torn Ukraine. (To learn more, click here.) This is a sad turn of affairs and underscores that there is still much work to be done. It’s important that we all strive to maintain our annual contribution to the Annual Fund-SHARE of The Rotary Foundation. However, additional contribution to PolioPlus would be in order for those who find themselves able to do so.
