This year District 7910 had two high school students participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange Short Term program. Oliver Moon, 17, was sponsored by the Weston Wayland Rotary Club, and Andrew Giordano, almost 16, was sponsored by the Neponset Sunrise Rotary Club. Both students chose to go to Spain for their exchange and were matched with Spanish students of similar age and interests. When asked about their favorite part of the exchange, Oliver said he "really liked getting to live like a Spanish teenager -- staying up late, walking around with friends late at night, talking, and just hanging out." Oliver was also excited to visit Bernaneú stadium, where Real Madrid plays, since that's his favorite soccer team. His host brother added, "Getting to know another culture is my favorite part [of youth exchange]. As for Andrew, he had a great time too. While in Spain he visited the historic city of Toledo with his host family, and he watched and celebrated with his host brother and a his friends Spain's win in the Euro Cup semi-final. A true Spanish tradition! When Andrew arrived back in Boston with his host brother, he and his family showed his host brother the sites around Boston and Massachusetts. For both Andrew and Oliver, participating in the short term program was a true cultural exchange -- experiencing a new culture in Spain and sharing their own American culture with a new friend. That's the goal of youth exchange: Promoting peace and understanding in the world, one exchange at a time.
