We are enjoying our visits, enjoying making new Rotary friends and learning about the reality of Rotary in District 7910.  It has been great to have our assistant governors accompany us on our visits and present the '16-'17 theme banners to the club presidents. We are looking forward to this week’s visits.

Community involvement has always been a factor in my life, from Jaycees in Columbus, Ohio a brief stint with the Lions Club in Cleveland, Ohio to youth sports coaching and boards. One Rotarian, Steve Groccia, invited me on numerous occasions and Rotary seemed like a fine organization to continue my community service. District Leadership Meeting Was  A Huge Success
 
How HUGE? So HUGE that another is planned for October 17!
 
District Governors Pat and Skip Doyle held their Leadership Meeting on July 19 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Leominster. This is an annual event for which DGs bring their District leaders and committee chairs together to review the goals for the new Rotary year.
 
This, year the event was presented in a facilitated format. The results will be consolidated and sent to all attendees so that the District Goals for each committee can be set.

More than 43,000 attendees left the Rotary International Convention in South Korea inspired to end polio for good, to celebrate The Rotary Foundation's centennial, and to champion changes that will help Rotary appeal to a broader audience.
 
On the last day, RI President K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran shared a personal story of his mother’s triumph over polio.

Concord Rotary 28th Annul Golf Tournament
 
The Rotary Club of Concord will host the 28th annual Thomas R. Huckins Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday, August 22 at the Concord Country Club to benefit the Scholarship Fund of Concord and Carlisle and Rotary charitable projects.
 
The shotgun start is at 1 p.m., preceded by registration and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cocktails and dinner will be at 6:30 p.m.

Framingham Rotary Promotes Concerts On The Green
 
On Friday nights this summer, Concerts on the Green, organized by the Framingham Parks & Services Department, are taking place on the green on Edgell Road near Route 9. This year, the Rotary Club of Framingham is one of the financial sponsors of the family-friendly concert series, and has its usual information booth at each concert as well. Concerts are free and open to the public.
'Wings & Wheels' Every Thursday Evening Through August In Stow

If it’s summer in Stow, it must be Wings & Wheels season! In cooperation withEAA #196, Friends of Minute Man Air Field, andNancy’s at the Airfield Café, the Rotary clubs of Acton-Boxborough, Maynard and Nashoba Valley are holding their fourth annual Wings & Wheels program every Thursday evening through August 25.

Young Women In Peru Learn To See A Future In Themselves

In Peru, women suffer higher rates of poverty and unemployment than men. About 50 percent of Peruvian women in the Sacred Valley region, which lies outside Cusco, will suffer severe physical or sexual partner abuse during their lifetimes. In 2012, members of the Rotary Club of Boulder’s New Generations pilot satellite club came up with a plan to address all of those problems by concentrating on empowering local women – specifically in their ability to make and act upon their decisions.  READ MORE

Campaign To End Polio: What you don't know

When was the last time there was polio in Europe? If you guessed 2002, the year the region was certified polio-free, you were wrong. The last time polio affected a child in Europe was last summer. In 2015, two Ukrainian children were diagnosed with paralytic polio. Given the way the disease manifests itself, that means many more were likely infected and didn’t show symptoms. At least one Western news outlet deemed the outbreak “crazy” – but the reality is that no place on Earth is safe from polio until the disease is eradicated everywhere. READ MORE

Foundation Note: '15-'16 District contributions to Rotary Foundation

Our 51 Rotary clubs were quite generous in their contributions to The Rotary Foundation funds during Immediate Past District Governor Jim Fusco’s 2015-2016 term, having contributed a total of $293,705. That averages $196 per member for the 1,498 members in the district at the start of the last Rotary year, on July 1, 2015. Compared to the prior year, total contributions were up 7 percent and per capita contribution was up 12.5 percent. Treasurer's Report: Message about your dues

The Rotary International dues bills were e-mailed to the 51 clubs in our District on July 22 and the District dues bills were e-mailed to clubs on July 26. Both the RI dues invoices and the District dues invoices were based on the membership numbers that you had on file with RI as of this July 1. Remember that these bills are due on receipt and the amounts may not be adjusted.
 
Many clubs have asked for a breakdown of the dues. For 2016-2017 Rotary year, the per-member dues amount is $126.08 and the projected per-member dues amount for '17-'18 is estimated at $130.58. For a detailed breakdown, click here

Membership Corner: Where will we find new members?

Your club has finally decided to address the membership gap between where you are and where you want to be. There is a consensus of the members to bring in and integrate a number of folks over the next three years, to double the club size. Everyone agrees this is a serious objective and well needed to spread the workload, increase the resources available to do more good in the community, develop future leadership, bring in new ideas and technology, create more fellowship and networking opportunities, develop more exciting agendas, and enhance and protect the long-term viability of Rotary and your club.  READ MORE
PolioPlus Update: District Polio Committee

I want to let you know that the District Polio Committee been very active. Our committee now includes Chris Spear, Pam Anastasi, Phil Sandler and Amanda Graves.
 
Last week, I visited the Clinton, Groton-Pepperell and Maynard Rotary clubs, encouraging them to contribute to Polio Plus. At Clinton and Groton-Pepperell, I distributed the Donation page (click here) on The Rotary Foundation's website to make easier donations from individuals. The correct boxes to check for a Polio Plus donation were highlighted in yellow. Two members from Clinton responded immediately with donations.  
 
It would be great if all clubs presidents would visit the Donation page and share its link with their members.  It makes the donation process much easier.  Remember the three-to-one bonus: Paul Harris credit; and club credit. Of course, this can be done online.

  • Real, natural, sincere, endearing expressions
  • Demonstrations of active leadership and impact
  • Special moments of camaraderie, friendship, warmth, and celebration

Bandey-Hefler Prepares For Trip To England: The Plane Leaves in Just 42 Days!

Our travelers are anxiously awaiting their two-week trip to England that begins on September 19. Recently, a Travelers Meeting was held at the home of Bedford Rotarian Patsy Lloyd.
 
The Bandey-Hefler Fellowship Exchange chairpersons on both sides of the Atlantic are hard at work planning the District 7910 group’s return trip to England on September 19. Geoff Philpot and Hugh Barnard, in England, are making presentations and have recruited enough hosts to care for our group for 2 weeks.
 
The travel dates for the trip to England are:
  • Monday, September 19: Flight to Heathrow in London
  • Tuesday, October 4: Flight back to Logan in Boston
