Rotary International established sustainability as priority. The Rotary Club believed that hosting a celebration that exemplifies sustainability was an essential way for us to give back to the community. Traditionally, balloons served as the centerpieces for this event, but this year we chose to use more environmentally friendly decorations, such as a tiny pumpkin, leaf decorations, and some twinkling lights that also showed how sustainable it is to reuse. The pumpkins that were available for everyone to take home as souvenirs. Rather than use disposable tablecloths, we borrowed them from Tyngsborough High School and then washed and returned them. Finally, we used compostable tableware, filling three compostable bags with leftover food, plates, utensils, napkins, cups, etc. These bags were brought to the compost bins at the Town Recycling Center and will become rich soil when composted.
We are looking forward to hosting this event annually and to continue expanding its sustainability to be a good example for the community.
