Looking for an impactful speaker? This week Needham had Jake Miskin, who put together a full-length award-winning movie about high school hockey and mental health. During Jake’s time at Needham High, there were multiple suicides and he felt it deeply. They are looking to set up screenings of the movie for schools and colleges. He will come to your club and play a clip from the movie and tell you about their plans.
From Jake: SHATTERED ICE is a sports drama movie. The story centers on a small-town New England teenage hockey player's attempt to navigate high school life when his best friend dies by suicide.

Shattered Ice is inspired by the writer's own high school experience at Needham High School, between 2005-2009, where he and his classmates lost multiple students to suicide. This fictional story is an amalgamation of experiences and events that took place while the writer and his fellow film producers were in high school, with creative liberties taken. They lost friends, picked each other up, and went to a hell of a lot of high school hockey games.

The film’s goal is to raise awareness, tell a powerful story, and send a message to other young teenagers/adults that there is light at the end of the tunnel, even in the darkest times.

The Shattered Ice film had its World Premiere on Feb 24th at the Sedona International Film Festival, which was covered by MovieMaker Magazine who it a rave review. The film also won the festival's award for Most Impactful Film. Check out this interview from the film festival.

The producers are now looking to get more prominent community members involved in support of the film and its message on mental health by supporting the project through a donation to the film’s social impact campaign. They are sponsored by the national mental health 501c3 non-profit Hope Givers and they are looking to raise money towards this stage of the film.

The social impact campaign involves screening Shattered Ice and having workshops across New England. Also, they are partnering with The Hidden Opponent, a nonprofit whose mission is to end mental health stigma in sports through advocacy, education, and support. The goal is to create a space around the film where student-athletes or anyone facing mental or emotional hardship can feel comfortable to share and heal. Taking care of one's mental health is often associated with weakness. Shattered Ice aims to flip that on its head, and show that real strength comes from vulnerability and seeking help. Shattered Ice will be a major tool in normalizing discussions of mental health with teens, young adults, their peers, teachers, parents, friends, and neighbors.

Be a part of this journey and help the Nehoiden Black Bears community to help normalize the conversation around Mental Health.

No donation is too small.
