Each year on 9/11 The Rotary Club of Concord hosts an appreciation awards ceremony in memory of a beloved Concord Rotarian, Al Filipov, and all those who perished 22 years ago during the attacks at the World Trade Center. "Al Filipov was a humble man, who was all about making people's lives better," stated Sharon Spaulding. "He prioritized service to the community. It is fitting on this day that we honor the first responders in Concord who keep us safe every day."Photo: Left to right, Sergeant Tia Manchuso of the Concord Police Department, Concord Rotarian Steve Levitsky, Firefighter Samantha McChesney of the Concord Fire Department
The ceremony began with Cambridge Rotarian, Carolyn Goff, leading us in God Bless America. Other Concord Rotarians, Karl Kussin, Steve Levitsky, and Rev. Dr. John Lombard each spoke briefly and Sharon Spaulding shared a letter of appreciation from Loretta Filipov, Al's widow.
The Al Filipov Award for Courage and Service was presented by Fire Chief Tom Judge to Firefighter Samantha McChesney. She was given a plaque and a donation will made to the Military Friends Foundation on behalf of the Concord Fire Department.
Police Chief Tom Mulcahy presented the next Al Filipov award to Sergeant Tia Manchuso. Tia also received a plaque and a donation will be made to a charity of her choice on behalf of the Concord Police department.
After the awards presentation attendees were invited to have coffee and pastries provided by Concord Teacakes.
